Joyce Fredrickson Obituary

Joyce Jeanette Fredrickson (94) died Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the Plum City Care Center in Plum City, Wisconsin. She was born April 23, 1918 in Plum City to Arthur and Lydia (Staehli) Fredrickson.
She grew up in the Plum City community and graduated from the Plum City High School in 1935. She attended College at River Falls, WI, and graduated from the Kahler Hospitals School of Nursing at Rochester, MN on May 26, 1945. After graduation she did private-duty work at the Kahler Hospital, then worked seven years at the City Hospital in Red Wing, MN.
January 9, 1953 she reported for active duty in the U.S. Navy. She took her Basic Naval Training at St. Albans, New York, then transferred to the Naval Hospital at Bethesda, Maryland and remained there until January of 1955. From there to the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA until August of 1958. Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands until September of 1959, then to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Yokosuka, Japan until November of 1960. While stationed overseas she traveled to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Thailand and New Delhi. Her next line of duty was at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA until November of 1963, U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina until December 1966, Lemoore Naval Station, CA until December of 1968 and then to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Rota, Spain until January of 1971. While in Spain she traveled to Germany, France, Switzerland and Africa. Her last duty station was at Millington, Tennessee which ended her career as a Lieutenant Commander serving almost 21 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy Nurses Corps. She was honorably discharged October 31, 1973.
After retirement from the Navy she worked at the U.S. Public Health Service Indian Hospital in Talihina, Oklahoma from 1973 to 1974. In August of 1974 she attended the Dallas, Texas Bible College and graduated in May of 1977.
After August of 1978 she had made her home at Plum City and Durand, WI. She did Home-Nursing for elderly residents in Durand. She was a chartered member of the Baptist Church in Durand.
From June of 2006- June 2010 she made her home at the Homeplace at Durand, WI. On August 23, 2010 she became a resident at the Plum City Care Center.
Joyce was a very intellectual person, both in the medical field and remembering poems she had learned in grade school. One of which was "A Psalm of Life" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow which she could recite the verses along with all the verses of many hymns.
She is survived by her brother, Earl of Plum City, WI; sister, Edna Rundquist of Red Wing, MN; sister-in-law, Marlys Fredrickson of Ellsworth, WI and nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents and brothers, Raymond, Donald, Harry and Lyle.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the Evangelical Free Church in Plum City, WI. Pastor Phillip Bloomdahl officiating. Burial will be at the Free Home Cemetery, south of Plum City, WI at a later date. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
