Ruth Phyllis Herbst

Ruth Phyllis Herbst (95) of Arkansaw died Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Oakview Care Center in Durand, WI surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 5, 1917 on Maple Ridge in Pepin County, WI; the youngest of eight children born to Rollin & Ann Hoffman Doughty. She attended Maple Ridge School and graduated from Union Free High School in Arkansaw, WI. While in high school Ruth wrote the Arkansaw Traveler school song which was used for all sports from 1933 to 1992. Her first job was working for her mother's brother, George Hoffman as a housekeeper. On December 5, 1936 she married her high school sweetheart, Vernon Herbst, and to that union was born, one daughter, Sherry; three sons, Brad, Brent and Scott. Later they were also mother & dad to Troy Herbst and Judy Keys. In 1987, Ruth and Vernon celebrated 52 years of marriage. Ruth was a wonderful home maker, who in her spare time loved painting and writing poetry and wrote a family book named "It Was Up Hill Both Ways". She enjoyed bowling and playing cards. Ruth was a member of the Royal Neighbors and was a very active member of the Arkansaw United Methodist Church. Ruth and Vernon always had an open door for all family & friends.
She is survived by her children, Sherry (Dennis) Dahl, Brent (Jackie) Herbst, Scott (Sandy) Herbst, all of Arkansaw, WI; a very special niece, Judy Harmon of Menomonie, WI and sister-in-law, La Vina Herbst of Hastings, MN; and her very loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Rollin & Ann Hoffman Doughty; husband, Vernon; infant son, Brad; grandson, Greg Dahl; brother-in-law, Troy Herbst; son-in-law, Dennis Harmon; seven siblings; Wilford, Herbert, Lottie, Belle, Katie, Fern, Melvina.
