Verta Lurene Smith

Verta Lurene Smith (93) of Durand, WI died Monday, March 4, 2019 at Advent Health in Durand, WI. She was born January 6, 1926 in Maxville Prairie, Buffalo County, WI; daughter of Louis and Effie (Keenlyne) Rosenberg. She attended Cascade School, Eau Galle School and graduated from Durand High School in 1943. She worked at a shipyard office in Portland, Oregon for a short time. She returned to work for Western Electric in Eau Claire., and then worked at the Durand Bakery. She was head cook for Durand School System for about ten years. She then worked for Petrolane Gas for five years. She served as secretary for the United Methodist Church for over thirty years, retiring in December of 1999.

On February 16, 1947 she married Norman Leroy Smith at the Methodist Parsonage in Durand. They lived all their married life in Durand. Norman died March 10, 2018. Verta enjoyed crocheting, quilting, doing picture puzzles and collecting salt and pepper shakers. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Girard of Durand and Susan (Michael) Doney of Eau Claire; son, Dennis (Beth) Smith of Elk Mound; seven grandchildren, Eric (Tania) Girard, Kari (Charles) Wold, Teri (Terry) Slifer, Matthew (Liz)Dolloff, Justin (Alyssa) Smith, Whitney Ronnei and Megan Smith; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; sister-in-law, Delores Smith; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Effie (Keenlyne) Rosenberg; husband, Norman Smith; brothers, Vaughn and Durward Rosenberg; and sons-in-law, David Dolloff and Randy Girard.

Memorial services will be 2:00 pm on Friday, March 8, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Durand with Pastor Grace Baldridge officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Forest Hill Cemetery in Durand. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Durand and one hour prior to services on Friday.
