Leigh Hagness Obituary

Leigh Tracy Hagness (89) of Durand, WI passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at Chippewa Valley Hospital in Durand, WI. He was born December 14, 1928 in Eau Claire, WI; son of Ernest and Beata (Kowitz) Hagness.
He attended and graduated from Durand High School. Following high school, Leigh and his family moved to Milwaukee after the death of their father. There he helped raise his brothers, before joining the United States Army. He served in Germany during the Korean Conflict where he attained the rank of Sergeant.
On July 29, 1953, he married Doris "Jeannie" Pickerign at Canton Lutheran Church. He worked for Harnischfeger Company in West Allis while attaining his teaching degree. Throughout his career, he taught grades K-12 at various locations in Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin. Leigh then retired after twenty years of teaching at 20th Street School in Milwaukee. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and American Legion Post #181. He wrote the Commanders Corner of the Courier Wedge along with Lon Johnson for years.
A lifetime trout fisherman, he also enjoyed football and baseball. He spent much of his time reading, building model airplanes, and playing cribbage.
He loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Leigh is survived by his children, Dean (Sandy) Hagness of Stevens Point, WI, Dori Hagness of Burlington, WI, and Traci Nelson of Wind Lake, WI; six grandchildren, Nicholas (Ayanna) Hagness Duren, Alexander Hagness, Christoper Hagness, Caitlin Hagness, David Nelson, and Travis Nelson; two great-grandchildren, Malcolm and Marcus Hagness Duren; and many caring family members.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Beata (Kowitz); wife, Jean; daughter, Randi; son-in-law, David Nelson; four brothers, Ernest, John, Robert, and Peter; and an infant sister.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Rucker and the staff at Chippewa Valley Hospital for their compassionate care of Leigh and Pastor Daniel Pfaffe for his caring ministry and support of the family over the years.
Memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church or American Legion Post #181 are appreciated.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Monday, August 13, 2108 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Durand, WI with Pastor Daniel Pfaffe officiating. Burial will be in the Lower Weston Cemetery in Weston Township, Dunn County, WI, with military honors provided by American Legion Post #181.
